Since the World Wide Developers Conference, the iPhone has been given new life and it’s being called the iPhone 4. It is true that when Apple does something, it does it well. Lets get one thing straight; this article is not meant to take away from anyone who plans to get the iPhone 4, but someone has to point out its flaws. After all, Jobs would never do such a thing.
So how can such a great device still crumble to Android? Its all about the limitations; Apple’s biggest issue.
FaceTime
From Apple – “People have been dreaming about video calling for decades. iPhone 4 makes it a reality. With the tap of a button, you can wave hello to your kids, share a smile from across the globe, or watch your best friend laugh at your stories — iPhone 4 to iPhone 4 over Wi-Fi. No other phone makes staying in touch this much fun.”
Apple is right about one thing, we have been dreaming about this for decades. However, Apple cant take credit for this one. The HTC EVO 4G has accomplished this before Apple. Not only have they accomplished it first, but Wi-Fi is not necessessary in order to make a call. That’s right, 3G is more than enough to hand its users a decent video quality call. This gives the EVO 4G’s video calling a more practical edge over the iPhone 4. The EVO 4G also works with Skype.
Retina Display
Apple says- “Thanks to the Retina display, everything you see and do on iPhone 4 looks amazing. Text in books, web pages, and email is crisp at any size. Images in movies and photos are stunning at almost any angle. That’s because the Retina display’s pixel density is so high, your eye is unable to distinguish individual pixels.”
From what we have seen so far, the display on the iPhone 4 is gorgeous. However, who’s complaining? This is not to say that innovation isn’t good, because it is. How about innovation on a larger scale? Why couldn’t they make the screen a little larger for extended comfort when watching those soon to be Netflix videos? Apple has always been the one to make their users compromise. This time, it’s by having the same size screen you’ve always had, only it looks better. Why cant iPhone users have a bigger screen AND higher revolution? While the larger Android screens may or may not compare to that of the iPhone 4, it’s not a factor for me. I’ve never really cared that my cable was a little fuzzy, i just wanted to see the whole picture.
Multitasking
Apple says- “Now you can run your favorite third-party apps — and switch between them instantly — without slowing down the performance of the foreground app or draining the battery unnecessarily.* This smarter approach to multitasking is available only on iPhone.”
Brilliant Apple! Now, how do I stop it? That’s the one question that has been nagging me since the combination of the WWDC and AT&T’s plan changes. Apple has never discussed how one can quite multitask. With apps running and consuming data in the background on AT&T’s new plans? That spells danger and hard earned money. Android has app killers. Also, Android runs on networks with unlimited data plans. So even if you wanted to multitask your phone to death (crash) you don’t have to worry about over charges. I pray for the consumers of tomorrow that the iPhone will.
Camera
Apple says- “Never miss a photo opportunity. The 5-megapixel camera built into iPhone 4 captures amazingly detailed images. A built-in LED flash illuminates low-light scenes. And the 5x digital zoom gets you closer to the action. You can even shoot self-portraits with the front camera.”
HTC EVO 4G. The only difference is that it has an 8 mega pixel camera. Android has always had zoom. We also have the low light for video shooting. Self-portraits are currently available, while for the iPhone 4 it isn’t.
Folders
Apple says- “Make room for more apps. Thanks to the App Store, you can choose from over 200,000 apps and games. But these apps can fill your Home screens pretty quickly. That’s where the new Folders feature comes in. It gives you an easy way to keep your apps organized and declutter your Home screens. And you can launch your favorite apps with a couple of taps.”
Since the G1 first existed this was possible, but don’t think for a second that iPhone 4 has rivaled Android here. They got the folder thing down packed but don’t forget about the live folders. A live folder is a folder that automatically updates itself with information. For example if you have a Facebook address folder with the ever changing information from Facebook, that folder will automatically update any information changed from Facebook right on your home screen.
Home Screen
Apple says- “Personalize your Home screen. You can change the background wallpaper on both your Lock screen and your Home screen. Choose from a variety of backgrounds included with your iPhone or select any picture from your library. It’s a great way to make iPhone uniquely yours.”
Holy America Batman! Apple just became less communistic!
Wallpapers… nice. Not only has Android accomplished this since the G1, we now have 3D wallpapers. Wallpapers that react with your touch. Apple likes to play as if its ‘innovating’ in every area that it operates in, when that is a big fat lie. They do a lot of great innovations but not in everything they do. They’re just playing catch up.
Don’t forget about widgets! Widgets are not available for iPhone. Widgets are apps that are ran directly on the home screen for complete customization and usage. The picture below explains…
Phone
Apple says – “Tap (or speak) to call.
To make a call on iPhone, tap a name or number. That’s it. You can tap to call from just about anywhere: a name in your contacts list, a number on a website or text message, even a phone number on a map listing. Voice Control lets you speak a name or number to make a call. And you can switch between calls, merge calls, or add up to five callers with a tap”
Android does this. I’m actually getting tired of saying that. Its slowly becoming a cliché. Not only does Android do this, but Android has native text to speech in EVERY application that requires you to speak. The best part about this is you dont even have to touch your phone to activate it. Simply set up your “start listening” protocol and complete voice operation of your phone available in different langues and also offers translation.
Browser
Apple says-”Surf faster. Surf more.
You’ll love surfing the web with Safari on iPhone 4. Thanks to the superfast Apple A4 processor, web pages render quickly, so you can do more browsing in less time. And the high-resolution Retina display renders pages beautifully, with perfectly crisp text and bright, vivid graphics.”
Android has the fastest browser. Tested. We also have flash. It can be turned on and off just like on Firefox. Options, options, options.
Maps and Compass
Apple says- “Find yourself.
Say you’re in an unfamiliar neighborhood looking for a nearby restaurant. With iPhone, you can pinpoint your location on a map so you can figure out how to get there from where you are. iPhone 4 finds your location quickly and accurately using a combination of GPS, Wi-Fi, and cellular towers. As you move, iPhone updates your location automatically. And when you arrive, you can drop a pin to mark your location and share it with others via email or MMS.”
Android does all of this. Plus Android has a FREE voice, turn by turn navigation standard. Apple is just playing catch up.
In a world that Android already does; iPhone is catching up

Matt
Most of these things the iPhone has done in previous models well before Android was even thought of. And please, have you seen EVO HTC vs iPhone 4 photos side by side?

The iphone 3gs is a really good phone. The lack of any significant udates on the i4 should make them furious. With Froyo (and especially rooted), iphone is not even in the same league anymore which is sad. Maybe next years release will be better.

iphone has been and always be a hype. i never liked the idea of an ipod/phone hybrid. waist of time/money. i hardly take my itouch out of my car since i have a deck that can control my ipod via usb. having to disconnect/reconnect an iphone everytime i get in and out of the car is a pain in the a$#. and the fact that its on att…that right there is a turn off to me, but thats just my opinion.

Hi, saw this post and wanted to point out what I believe to be a mistake. The iPhone 4 takes self portraits with front facing camera. The specs clearly state front camera takes photos as well as video. There is a video of how it’s done right on YouTube.
